ALTÉ FASHION – ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BEING AN ALTÉIST

Coined from the word alternative, Alté is not entirely a new wave in the fashion scenes, especially here in Nigeria as it is evident both in the music and art industries. Alte fashion has a mix of vintage / retro and edgy style to it and mostly revolves around one’s creativity to look different and have fun in the way they dress. These set of individuals are often times referred to as “Alteist” and is not only applicable to fashion, it is a lifestyle. Most Alteist are usually drawn to colorful fashionable items like fanny pack, baggy jeans / pants, fishnets, crocs, odd hairstyles and sometimes gothic makeup. They pay attention to details and always have that jolt of extraness in almost everything.

While it’s not yet a wide spread term in fashion, some people find it offensive when referred to as an Altéist probably because it has been associated with being a miscreant in Nigeria and I honestly don’t blame them because we live in a society where we always follow the norm.

Regardless, Alteist are not cut out for such as they live and express themselves unapologetically, through fashion, weather or not they are being criticized for their odd way of dressing or sense of style.

However, an alté lifestyle does not limit you to a particular mode of dressing or behaviour which is quite exhilarating if you ask me.

What are your opinions on the Alte lifestyle? If you identify as one, would you feel pissed if someone referred to you as an Alteist?
